Daylight: a sense of space, and using less energy

Space in Hong Kong is tight, so a unit that feels more open is worth planning for. Daylight makes a room feel clearer and less enclosed. Paired with lighting control, it is also easier to avoid the sense of running every lamp at full output all day. ffffff design asks, while partitions and materials are still open: where are the windows, where can light be borrowed, and where do shade and heat need to be handled. Daylight is a design question, not only a question of buying lamps.

From white, everything begins. Borrowed light is what makes the quiet space useful.

Why daylight matters

  1. A sense of space — where light reaches, the boundary seems to step back, and a small unit feels less pressed
  2. How the room is used — reception, display, and rest areas with daylight usually feel better to be in, and easier to stay in
  3. An energy attitude — using daylight during the day means artificial light can be lowered by zone (the actual saving depends on weather, orientation, and opening hours; this article does not state a percentage)

How a plan can improve the sense of space

Do not block the windows without a reason

A solid wall should not cut the path of light unless it has to. Half-height storage, fluted glass, and an open route usually borrow light more easily. The changing-room example is in the materials note.

Materials and colour

Pale surfaces with a moderate reflectance carry light further. A whole room of deep, light-absorbing colour makes a small unit darker — balance that against the brand.

Lamps should support daylight, not fight it

The window side can stay on ambient light. Deep zones without a window take the accent light and the coves. Episode 5, on lighting zones, is the same plan.

Shade and heat belong in the same thought

A west-facing elevation or a low curtain wall needs a look at glare and heat. Bright is not the same as a room that overheats or fades its materials.

A commercial-building limit

New openings in the external wall, external shading, or a change of glass are often constrained by the management office and the building rules. Line up episodes 1 and 2 before drawing a wall of glass.

A unit with windows that still feels dark, or a unit that relies only on lamps, can be read from the plan together. From white, everything begins.

FAQ

If there is no window, is there nothing to do?

A wall-wash cove, pale surfaces, mirrors, and glass partitions can suggest openness. The effect is not the same as daylight, but it can ease the sense of being enclosed.

Does a daylight change always mean structural work?

No. Partition materials and storage height often help on their own. A new opening in the external wall is a different level of approval.

Can energy use be promised as a fixed cut in the bill?

No. This article does not promise one. Orientation, glass, opening hours, and lighting control all affect the result. The note is about the design attitude only.
